94-feet: When Three Just Wasn't Enough Edition

Over at CoachCal.com, in addition to looking at the UK vs. 'Bama series history, and taking a peak at which Kentucky players have excelled against Alabama over the years, I examine a portion of the 1986 UK season in which the 'Cats played Alabama four times, winning all four contests. Kenny Walker plays a prominent role in the story, and finds his own happy ending as his remarkable career came to a close. Here's an excerpt:

"Finishing the season ranked No. 3 in the country and with a 32-4 record, the Cats rolled through the SEC season with a 17-1 record. Included in those 17 conference wins were two games against Alabama. The first UK win, in a game played at Rupp Arena, came on Jan. 11, 1986, and featured a tremendous effort by UK's (Kenny) Walker as he scored 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. James Blackmon contributed 18 points on 9-of-11 field goals, as the No. 11 Cats rolled the unranked Tide at home by a score of 76-52."

Cats vs. Bama

Who would have thought that the all-time high for rebounds against Bama would be Grevey, not known for his rebounding? And for steals, Pelphrey, not known for his fleetness of foot?

Thanks Ken for the nice research and write-up.

Agree

Especially about Pelphrey, but the Paintsville boy also holds the UK record for steals against, I believe, Arkansas. When I saw that I thought the same thing; Pelphrey wasn’t exactly Cliff Hawkins out there, but, when I thought about it, I bet many of Pelphrey’s steals were a result of that trapping press they ran all the time.

Thanks for rthe kind words!
