Kentucky Wildcat Football: National Signing Day Primer

With national signing day coming up on February 1, here is a quick look on the Kentucky Wildcats Football Class of 2012 and how it is shaping up.

OVERVIEW

Kentucky is sitting on 23 commits, the vast majority of which are rated three star by Rivals and Scout. The Cats plucked six and three prospects from the hotbeds of Georgia and Florida, respectively. Five commits are homegrown. The class is heavy on DBs, with seven total signees, including speedy CB Cody Quinn, a Illinois decommit who chose UK last week. Unfortunately, Kentucky has signed only one LB, Kadeem Thomas from Tallahassee, FL. Other holes are at WR (2) and TE (0). There are no 300lb. run stoppers in the group, but UK did manage to grab 6'4" 290lb. DT Thomas Chapman from Manual High School in Louisville. He is one of the state's top players.

THE PLUMB

From a PR and competitive standpoint, the Cats' most important signee is Parade All-American QB, Patrick Towles. Patrick has the size (6'5", 230), speed (4.7) and arm strength to be top flight SEC signal caller. A true dual threat, Towles is listed in the ESPN Recruiting Rankings as and "Athlete", though he will undoubtedly be behind center at UK. Towles will not participate in spring practice (something Kentucky never seems to be able to get Quarterbacks to do) but is on record that he expects to compete for a starting job in the fall. A Ft. Thomas Highlands pedigree means he's been well coached and is somewhat used to the spotlight.

Star-divide

STILL OUT THERE

Kentucky's chances at landing a big time class have increased substantially over the last several days with Tennessee began encouraging of its 4 star commits to reopen their recruiting (how the Volunteers are still in a position to cast off 4 star recruits is anyone's guess). Imani Cross is a 6'0" 222lb. power running back who has narrowed his choices down to UK and Nebraska. He is the top uncommitted rusher in the country at this moment. Obviously Nebraska is pretty attractive from a football standpoint, but perhaps Kentucky can win Cross with the promise of playing time and remaining in the SEC (Cross and his family are in Gainesville, GA).

Likewise, LB Khalid Henderson finds himself a man without a country after receiving a "things have changed" call from Derek Dooley earlier this month. Henderson (6'1" 210) is another Georgia guy and is said to be coming for an official visit this weekend. His recruitment is much more open than Crosses, with UCF, Duke, Ole MIss and maybe Georgia and Maryland still in the mix. Sounds like landing him will be like filling in an inside straight. Nonetheless, it looks like the Cats will get the last crack at the young man, which can't hurt.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As is always the case, Kentucky will need to fight hard in the next 10 days to keep the kids they have committed and go out and try to reel in a surprise or two. This year's class is competitive with recent classes talent-wise but the Cats have not gotten help where they needed it most (LB,WR,TE). I don't have a good feel for where the Cats might be with JC players at this point, but landing an SEC ready player at one of these positions .

If Henderson and Cross both decide to come at the last minute, and the Cats hold on to most everyone else (count on a defection or two, as always), there will be reason to celebrate in Lexington. As it stands, Kentucky will sign some nice players, but this isn't the class that will get them over the hump in the SEC.

My friends who are in touch with Big Ten recruiting (I live on Columbus, after all)

have had great things to say about Quinn.

Lordy, I’m worried about the lack of pass catchers. Maybe some of these DBs can try and play 2 ways.

UK had a few good WR recruits last year that redshirted

Namely Darryl Collins and Rashad Cunningham. Who knows where Bookie Cobbins will play. He could also be a WR. DeMarco Robinson played last year and wasn’t impressive, but maybe he’ll improve in year 2 (he was a 3 star). I think that’s the reason the staff focused on other positions. It’s not like UK can recruit someone like AJ Green who is ready to dominate from day one. The best we can hope for is someone who brings excitement and flashes potential (like Randall Cobb).

That being said, UK still has a slim chance at getting a 4 star WR from Cincy named Monty Madaris and is involved with two 3 star WRs, Cody Core and Raph Andrades. The internet tells me we’ve got a good shot with Core, but Andrades is likely headed to Arkansas or Notre Dame.

Good info.

Didn’t we “poach” Collins from Alabama? Small victories.

You got me excited about Madaris!

But most of the (free) scouting sites that I visit indicate that he no longer has interest in UK. They also note that Steve Brown recruited him. Brown’s on the Titans staff now.

From what I've seen

It looks like Madaris will go to Mich St. Most sites say he is no longer considering UK, but Madaris’s last official list still included UK. At least we made the final 3. I don’t know who was recruiting him.

We did poach Collins from Bama. Bama wanted him to grayshirt and we swooped in. The same thing happened with an O-Lineman from LSU last year, but I believe that guy got homesick and transferred.

Is Morgan Newton returning or will he graduate?
I've not heard anything to the contrary

So I assume he’s returning. Morgan is in a tough spot. I can’t see him beating Max Smith out (assuming either can beat out Towles), yet he has his younger brother joining the team next year. Given that he is such a great kid, he’ll probably be real conflicted about leaving. I’d love to see Newton on the field at another position, even if he has to burn a redshirt in ‘12. We’ll see.
If anyone else has better info, please chime in.

I am only going to make one comment......it won't be enough........

considering where we start out the season this year……it wont be nearly enough. We need three classes chocked full of 3-4* athletes at every key position to get back into a decent spot in the SEC.

Nice job on the write up Alex….

It's good to see three star players

I’m most looking forward to seeing some of the players from last year’s good recruiting class in year 2. I am happy with the way UK is recruiting, but it still takes time for 3 star players to make an impact. Hopefully we’ll start to see some of that this year.

Great stuff, Alex

Sounds like UK has a legit shot with Cross. Hope we get him. Seen a little of Towles and he looks stout. If Max Smith develops into an All-Conference type starter, I wonder how long Towles would be willing to sit and wait. But then again, that’d be a nice problem to have.

How do the other teams in the SEC look?

.

About As You Would Expect

Nationally:

1. Alabama
4. Florida
11. Tennessee
13. South Carolina
15. LSU

Thank you Alex.

As we have said here before, baby steps. I believe! Is it April yet? :-)
