"Fans" whining about the BCS Championship game contenders are losers. (via antigallery)
Sports Illustrated had this article today containing all sorts of petulant whines from alleged college football fans, universally from other conferences, who are unhappy with the the rematch between the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide tonight to determine the 2012 BCS champion.
This is the first example:
You and all the other talking/writing heads in the land can come up with any reason you want for us to watch the big BCS game on the 9th. I assure you I won't be watching. Hopefully, legions of fans follow suit.
-- E-mail from John Hauge in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
All I can say about this John Hauge person is that he and his ilk are utterly pathetic. Don't watch, who cares? But please, just shut up with your miserable whine. Nobody likes a loser who can't stand to see winners win.
No matter what you think about the matchup, the BCS was explicitly designed to make sure the top two teams in college football every year meet for the BCS championship, whether or not they win their division or conference. Many people think that system is flawed, and I agree with them, but the fact remains that this is the setup. Watch, don't watch, I don't care, but the right two teams are playing, and about that I am utterly certain.
Of course, others may disagree, and that's fine, but that disagreement no longer has meaning. It is done, and cannot be undone. Get over it. Millions of college football fans will watch the game to see two outstanding teams play, and a few sourpuss whiners will boycott the game because they don't like to see two teams that actually take defense seriously grind it out.
To the whiners, may the proverbial male camel drag his dangly bits through your collective morning coffees, and may it taste as sour as your dispositions. For the rest of us, this should be a treat.

LOL
Amen brother. I am extremely excited about tonight’s matchup. Studs all over the field. This is gonna be an intense game.

That’s worthy of Carnac the Magnificent.

Once upon a time...
in this fair land (with apologies to Gordon Lightfoot) there was no BCS. And the arguments were many and often justified, for the best team in the Big Ten had to play in the Rose Bowl against the best team California (sorry other Pac 10 teams but that’s how it usually worked out). and the best of the SEC went to… etc. And the matchups had no discernible relationship to determining a champion, and everything to do with putting fannies in the seats.
The BCS
may be flawedis flawed. but it is a better system with fewer problems than the non-system that preceded it One of it’s inherent flaws is that it is limited to the perceived “’top two” teams, and seldom is it cut and dried who the top two teams are in college football. This will remain until there is some sort of playdown, but when it is the top four, then there will be arguments from #5, 6,… etc. And rightly or wrongly neither the universities want to extend the playing season, nor do the other bowls want their outcomes pushed further into the shadows of irrelevancy. And if you are a fan of a school that always seems to be ignored (listen up Boise State fans) when it come to championships, or even major bowls take a hint, get a loyal fan base. Given an excuse a bowl will always invite a mediocre Kentucky team to play, because the fans will show up, the tickets will be sold, and the party will go on. Outside of the championship contest the bowls are a business, and the business involves selling tickets, and Boise State football team does not fill the stadiums. [and as a personal note, lose the blue field, it may be “unique”, but it sure isn’t appealing IMHO]

I agree....If you are under age of say 25 (or so) the BCS is probably all you know....
too many people don.t remember the old way of determining a National Champion which was far worse than the current system. It’s not even a debate which system is better. So when I see some folks post that the “BCS is the worst system known to man” or other similar things, then I know we are dealing with someone that doesn’t remember how it used to be.
That being said, I prefer a playoff without question. However the BCS is light years better than before.

If you pick the top four teams...
you may not get the best four, but you’ll certainly get the BEST.

Treat?
Yeah it’s possible although the “Game of the Century” that was played…what 2-3 months ago…hardly lived up to it’s billing. I will watch, albeit clicker in hand,in case once again it becomes a battle of field goal kickers. I know we all are stuck with this so called system to “guarantee” 1 and 2 play for the national championship (not sure I buy that) but it always leaves me wondering why on earth a NCAA champion in what may be the most popular sport is crowned using this ridiculous method. I hope the game tonite is a treat that lives up to all the hype which has lasted a month (again..totally ridiculous) but until a champion is decided..and I mean REALLY decided…on the field by use of a playoff system, I just can’t get totally stoked over another BCS super bowl.

To each, his own.
We have what we have.
Glenn Logan - January 9, 2012
Agreed the top two teams are playing...but
I don’t think humans or computers should decide who plays in the championship game. Obviously they need to decide who is desrving of competing for it but I think a 1+1 is inevitable at this point as a minumum in 2014.
The White Mandingo - January 9, 2012
I hope so.
+1 would be a decent starting point. I’d like to see it go a little deeper, but not a lot.
Glenn Logan - January 9, 2012
The so called "Super Conferences"...
once they are organized and completed will be the death knell of the BCS system IMO. Those conferences will decide on some kind of playoff system. Even then it won’t be perfect. But it will be better than the current way of doing things.
maysvilleblue - January 9, 2012
only if you assume the champion is from one of the Super Conferences
otherwise you are guaranteed to be on the outside looking in. IMHO

Okay Sherman, set the wayback machine for the 1981 football season...
Okay Mr. Peabody….
The end of 1981 the NCAA football champion was…?
Count ’em folks six teams were voted #1 by someone, thats right 6! And chances are none of the teams would have played each other, and before wall to wall coverage, many of the voters would not have seen more than one or two games of any of the games by teams outside their area, and maybe not even seen all of the teams on tv.
so how deep shall we go with our playoff scheme? If you are coaching Nebraska say where do you practice for 3 extra games in December and January. Given a typical Nebraska winter you aren’t going to be doing it outside in preparation to play in one of the sunshine states where the bowls typically are played. How do you budget both time and money to go and practice where you are going to play? It’s one thing to budget for going to a bowl in say New Orleans, but what if the next week you have to pay to be in Miami, and then if you continue the next week in California…etc.
Above I assumed 8 teams, cut it to 4 and you make it 2 extra games, but which 4 get the nod ? Look again at the teams voted NCs in 1981, is their anyway without someone having a legitimate beef?

Clemson.
That’s easy.

Arguments the meat of sports...
would a modern day hitter last a season in the beanball era, could Secretariat beat Twenty Grand, would Calapari recruit a Dampier, ad infiniteum.
I am sure we will both agree only Sagarin got the NC right in 1950. LOL
blenheim bard - January 9, 2012
I don't know.
I was not yet conceived then, so I am unqualified to comment on 1950.
Glenn Logan - January 9, 2012
Why?!
It doesn’t stop anyone else. LOL

Heh.
No, s’pose not. :-)

Thanks to LSU and Bama
This game has helped me realize how much I like football. Turns out I don’t like football enough to watch a rematch of a defensive struggle between a team I don’t like and a team I don’t care about. When there is no novelty (the teams have met before), low scoring potential (last game was 9-6), and I’ve got no rooting interest, then I don’t get excited about the national championship game. I’ll probably tune in during the 4th quarter if it’s close.
KDH2011 - January 9, 2012
This game will be more exciting than most of this past weekend's playoff games.
UK1972 - January 9, 2012
You've outdone yourself here...
Nice word-smithing there, no doubt!
Living in the land of “Roll Tide”, it’s been the topic of conversation for a month+ here. I’ll watch, in the end, the SEC wins another BCS Championship and since UK isn’t playing in it, then that’s all I care about.
EagleTDL - January 9, 2012
The point
I take from all of the critics of this game is dominance creates great jealousy. The very mention of the SEC is enough to make detractors’ faces turn sour. Hope John Hauge enjoys the OWN programming tonight.
blupride - January 9, 2012
I cant see not watching this game - if you are a fan of football ...
Great players and coaches on both sides of the ball … this one I think will come down to the intangibles … first one to “blink” loses. I watched every play of the first game and though I probably wont be able to tonight (work tomorrow) I’m still going to try to.
I want to see Bama win a close game – just to see the controversy … other than that I just want to enjoy a good game – defensive battle or other wise.

Geaux Tide! or is it Roll Tigers?

Glenn, I read through the Link-A-Paloozas, but I don't remember if you linked to this piece.
Its an aritcle by a staff writer from the Omaha World-Herald in Nebraska, explaining how the SEC came to rule college football.
There is a hint of sour grapes in there.
bob in bg - January 10, 2012
I did not read that.
Thanks for the link.
