A Sea Of Blue

Kentucky Wildcats (1) at Mississippi St. Bulldogs: Game Preview

Tonight, the Mississippi St. Bulldogs welcome the Kentucky Wildcats to The Hump in Starksville, Mississippi for a basketball contest that has no major implications for the SEC regular season, but major implications, at least potentially, for the NCAA tournament. A win here by the Bulldogs would really help them climb the seed ladder.

However, this Kentucky team seems to know not indifference, or overconfidence. What they do know is winning, and intensity, and execution, and they don't seem to need motivation from anywhere but within. That's nice to see, and as this team has matured, Calipari has been giving them their head more and more often, and it's paying off big time. With that said, this road trip is an SEC away game, and all such games require extra care, extra effort, and extra attention to detail.

Mississippi St. has been the other side of that coin. They seem to require a constant reminder of what they are playing for and what is at stake lest they drift off into fruitless basketball. The last three games, inexplicable losses to less talented teams all, stand in stark contrast to Kentucky's in terms of motivation, execution, and frankly, success. Mississippi St. is talented enough to go far in the NCAA tournament, but they don't seem to be willing, or able, to put all that talent to purposeful, efficient basketball.

Injuries, etc.

Mississippi St.:

  • Renardo Sidney - back spasms - questionable tonight, likely game-time decision.
  • Shawn Long - personal issue - out indefinitely.
  • Kristers Zeidaks - Eligibility - out for season.

Kentucky: None

Mississippi St. Strengths vs. UK

  1. MSU rarely puts teams on the free throw line, and it's a good idea to keep Kentucky off the stripe.
  2. MSU is a very good defensive rebounding team, surrendering less than 30% OR's to foes. They are in the top 25 in the country in DR%
  3. The Bulldogs do not turn the ball over much.
  4. MSU shoots the three well. Not as well as Kentucky, but well.
  5. MSU is at home in a tough arena worth at least three points.

Mississippi St. Weaknesses vs. UK

  1. MSU is not a good offensive rebounding team.
  2. The Bulldogs do not get to the free throw line very well, and don't shoot them great.
  3. Kentucky's defense inside the arc is much stronger than MSU's offense.

Kentucky Strengths vs. Mississippi St.

  1. Kentucky's offense and defense are much more efficient than Mississippi St.
  2. The Bulldogs do not defend either the 2 or the three particularly well.
  3. Kentucky is a vastly better shot-blocking team than MSU.
  4. Kentucky is a better offensive rebounding team.

Kentucky Weaknesses vs. Mississippi St.

  1. The Hump is a very tough place to play, and Bulldog fans are loud and proud.
  2. MSU's good defensive rebounding could make UK's offense less efficient.

Key Matchups for Kentucky:

  1. Dee Bost. Bost is a dynamite point guard who can do it all -- shoot, pass, and attack the rim. Bost also takes very good care of the basketball. He will be a handful for whoever is guarding him.
  2. Arnette Moultrie. Moultrie is a slasher who finds a variety of ways to get the ball in the basket, and is an outstanding rebounder on both sides of the ball.

Key Matchups for Mississippi St.

  1. Terrence Jones. Other than Renardo Sidney, the Bulldogs just don't have the mass to match up to Jones. He will be very tough in the post, and Jones is far too mobile for Sidney, who has a nodding relationship, at best, with the concept of defense.
  2. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Rodney Hood is his likely defender, and although Hood is technically big enough, he just isn't strong enough to match up with MKG.

Analysis

This game depends a lot on which Mississippi St. team shows up. If it is the tough, determined Bulldogs that took down Vanderbilt in Nashville, we are in for one heck of a fight. If it is the laissez-faire Bulldogs with cowbells for brains that dropped the last three games in a row to inferior foes, they are going to get a sharp lesson from Kentucky.

The Dawgs have played the 'Cats tight they last three years, and some controversial calls have led to outbursts by MSU head coach Rick Stansbury of varying intensity. Look for another one tonight if there is even a little controversy, as Stansbury seems to feed on that kind of energy.

As ponderous, overweight, and limited as he is, Renardo Sidney is still a great talent and creates some matchup issues for Kentucky. Sidney is far too massive to be defended effectively by Anthony Davis, and he is a serious load in the post. Don't be surprised, if he plays, if Kentucky double-teams Sidney and forces him to pass. He ought to be a capable post passer, but he just doesn't seem to have the feel for it.

Arnett Moultrie will definitely create some problems with his length and aggressiveness, particularly on the glass, Kentucky must pay particular attention to making sure they have a body on him when Davis goes for blocks, or he will have a field day getting stickbacks.

Kentucky must also be careful to identify MSU's shooters, as the Dawgs have some good ones in Rodney Hood, Bost, and Jalen Steele who can really light it up from the outside. MSU is one of the tougher matchups in the SEC when they are playing well, because they have all the pieces for a great team, even though their depth is limited. But they can shoot, post, rebound and defend when motivated, so they represent one of the major dangers for Kentucky remaining in the regular season.

This is a dangerous game, and an upset would not be a surprise.

Fickle Finger Of Fate — Again

We’ve been told, and told again, that every UK game is the opponent’s Super Bowl — and no doubt it’s true — but this season fate has seemed to frown on the Cats. IU is hot with much to prove, Vandy has Game Day in the house, Ole Miss coming off a Dores-drubbing and team discord, and now MSU is coming off 3 straight losses with their big (in all facets) man under scrutiny plus the revenge factor — isn’t it time for lady fortune to smile? I fully expect the Dogs to play their best game so lace ’em tight fans.

I have laced mine tight 4 times today, and game time is still over 90 minutes away.
I think that Lady Fortune is smiling on us.

She is giving us the gauntlet of tests that this young team needs in preparing for a championship run.

I know have "O Fortuna" in my head.

I hope the football Cats won’t mind.

I have found that your perceptions are about 99% right. I hope you are right on again tonight. Man I’ve got the jitters over this one. Worse than the Vandy game.

This is a game I have been simultaenously dreading and wildly anticipating all season.

It would be tough to find a coach I despise the way I do Stansbury. (Ok, and Bruce Pearl but he’s off the radar for the moment.) I have almost as much respect for the State fanbase (sorry, the cup hurling was a low I refuse to forget). Add to that the fact I have continuously questioned WHY Renardo Sidney still has a D-1 scholarship and well…you get the idea.

That said, State has a number of talented players, Dee Bost in particular. The team and their fans are well aware of how precarious their position is to make the Dance, and as such the Hump will likely resemble one of those Filene Basement Bridal Gown sales you always heard about, (complete with poor fashion choices) only with a lot more vitriol and a little less squeeing.

I’m sure Cal and the team leaders have warned the younger generation that this will be a WAR that makes the trip to Memorial look tame by comparison. If they can keep their heads while Stansbury looses his, we have a real shot at another W. If not….ugh.

Fingers crossed. (and you’re welcome for the visuals ;-)

Q & A With AD

USA Today asks, Anthony Davis answers. I didn’t realize he led Cats in so many categories.

Two thoughts:

Didn’t Dee Bost spend most of the game two years ago driving the lane and then lunging suddenly into Big Cuz if he was anywhere nearby?

And this is hard to believe but Bobby Knight actually said the word Kentucky last night, saying we had a good team this year. However, that was a set up to praise Vandy for their valiant losing effort against us.

It's the end!

Must be the consensus we might possibly pull this off and he needed to say something good to save face.

Twisted Knight Thoughts

I’ve been wrong all year. I REALLY want Kentucky to fail. Therefore, I need to say they are good and they will turn in to a bad team.

I take it more as he really wanted to say something good about Vandy

and to make their loss look better he had to admit we were good.

I'd say you're rite

He did a show a few nites ago, breaking down all of the top teams, guess which top team he never mentioned ?

Gawd, now we are trying to figure out what RMK was thinking

Go ahead ref, give Sully the foul and get on with this game already so we can watch ours. ’-)

I can tell you what RMK is thinking.......

I Should Have Put Kentucky In My Bracket!!!!!

its easier to figure out what he is thinking

than tryin to figure out what women are thinking !!! lol

Not from my point of view! '-)

Yes. I would have to say that, “The sky is falling.” LOL

He had to be wiped out or on pharmaceuticals.

Every year I think Miss St is a strong contender for the SEC Title

And every year I’m wrong. This game still worries me.

In random news, K-State is killing Missouri right now by 12.

What JL said

still worries me too.

Tied record

Heard in the pregame that the teams had an even record against each other, 117-117. This might be the last time they play in a while.

Missouri will regret

moving to the SEC. Except for the money, which is why they did it.

I think they'll be okay basketball wise

Frank Haith is a decent enough coach and they’ll be able to get good players. I think they’ll probably be around the 4-6 best teams in the league most years.

I am a little nervous

This game makes me a little nervous. The fact that it’s on their home floor plus it is a must win for Miss St makes this a dangerous game. Will be interesting for sure!

Do we want AD to hit a three tonight,

Or save it for Rupp?

I want Twany to hit a 3 tonight,

And then walk away like it’s just business as usual.

Same here....but I want EVERYBODY to hit one.......

one right after another……

That sounds like a winner! All five starters and the first two off the bench.

ok......I'll settle for just those guys........lol.......
Looks like he is 0 - 6

Seven and eight are both good numbers. "-)

I don't like guaranteeing anything......

but God has given me the best day ever……and I don’t think it’s over yet!!!!!!

That is either really good

Or you have had a lot of rotten days.

Wife had to have heart cath today.....we were pretty scared......had some chest pains......turns out it is stomach related....been doing tests for two weeks, last one was today

got 100% clean bill of health……not even any damage from age….which is unusual in a 50 yr old

Great news.

I could say something about living with you, but I won’t.
Oh wait … darn it today. j/k ABC.

go ahead.....I can take it.....I got broad shoulders and a wide backside.....lol
good to hear Greg
thx......I may celebrate every shot.......lol
Go ahead. I am so far ahead of you somebody has to catch up.
Bost and Moultrie-

Are the real deal. The rest of them can not hang with us… I do not like their coach, so let’s drill ’em Wildcats!!!

I don't like Stansbury either

despite my natural tendency to like all things from Ky.

welcome to ASOB
Thanks

I enjoy the posts and commentors

I feel bad for those guys that run "For Whom the Cowbell Tolls" (the MSU blog)

they run a good blog. If look at it right now, there isn’t 1 comment on the 7 main page stories. Not a single one!

I understand they going thru a rough patch and maybe more football oriented but come on man that is pretty sad. Those bloggers deserve better than that.

I dont know if we can take credit or not,

but I have seen at least three UK sites go to live blogs this year for games….
BIG NAME sites…..

Maybe we rub off on people….

They saw what fun we have had.

Apart from being AT the game, this is the only way to do it.

Game thread is UP!
